Why should I let my pet participate in a clinical study?
Participating in a clinical study is completely voluntary. If you choose to enroll your pet in a study, your pet will have access to the highest level of veterinary care, with the possibility of having access to a new treatment that’s not yet available. In some cases, you may also receive financial compensation. Even if your pet does not directly benefit from the study, you will help advance veterinary care for other animals around the world.
Are there any risks to my pet from participating in a study?
To reduce risk, a veterinarian will closely monitor your pet during the clinical study. Every study is carefully reviewed to ensure they are well designed and any risks are mitigated. However, in some cases, the study treatment may not be effective for your pet, or it may be associated with side effects. Your pet’s condition may not improve during the study and may potentially get worse. There is also the possibility of unforeseeable, study-related risks.
A veterinarian will discuss any risks with you, before you enroll your pet.
What happens when I enroll my pet in a study?
When you enroll your pet, you will first be asked to read, understand, and sign the Informed Consent Form that clearly explains the study, including the potential risks and benefits that may occur for you and your pet. The veterinary staff will be available to answer any questions.
It’s important that you follow the study procedures — for example, giving the medication on time, withholding food that may be required at certain times, or completing diaries or questionnaires.
You may be asked to accompany your pet during appointments at the veterinary clinic, so that the staff can gather additional data.
If you’re unable to comply with the study requirements or complete the study as scheduled, it’s important to let your veterinarian, or the veterinary staff, know.
